SSR and Log

1) "Everyday Use" p. 48.

Discuss direct and indirect characterization.

Direct characterization: the author directly states a character's traits. Ex. Wilber is a mean, heartless man.

Indirect characterization: The author shows a character's personality through his/her actions, thoughts, feelings, words, appearance, or through another character's observations and reactions. [what the character says, does, thinks, and/or what others say to/about the character.]
Ex. Wilber poked the poor little kitty's eyes out and smashed its tail.

Quickwrite warm-up: If you could save only one precious possession of yours from being destroyed or left behind, what would you save?

Write a composition (one page).

a) Write your topic sentence. Underline it.

b) Describe the precious possession. Use rich adjectives and similes.

c) Elaborate why this possession means so much to you.

2) Begin reading "Everyday Use" beginning on page 50 in new Literature textbook through p. 54.
