1) Farewell to Manzanar: Read Ch. 19-21. Discuss Jeanne Wakatsuki's difficulty in assimilating into mainstream society, the racial prejudice she encounters due to her Japanese ethnicity, her struggles with respect for her father, and her difficulty in coming to terms with her Japanese roots while wanting to belong to the American culture in which she grew up and using her femininity as a tool to break the "intangible barriers" she writes about in order to fit in this society.

Farewell to Manzanar: Read Ch. 17-20. Discuss Woody's visit to Japan and how both he and Great Aunt Toyo benefit from his visit. Also discuss Jeanne Wakatsuki's return to public school and the "double impulse" she has to be "invisible" because of her Japanese ethnicity but also noticed and accepted as one who fits into mainstream society.

NOTE: Farewell Vocabulary Quiz 3 (Words with *) has been moved to Friday 2/3 due to time constraints with the memoir.

3) If finished, work on homework assignment: Copy all * words from Farewell...Glossary, write definition, part of speech, skip a line, and write a sentence which shows its meaning. Due Thursday, January 26.
