2. Analysis of short story with review of literary terms: setting, PLOT[exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution], characterization, and theme. Please obtain notes from peer of discussion in class.

NOTES to copy from the board:
1. A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence or complete thought.
Ex: [Mary had a little lamb], whose fleece was white as snow. The words inside the brackets compose an independent clause, with "Mary" as the subject and "had" as the verb.
2. A gerund is a verb form ending in -ING that is used as a noun.
Ex:
Walking is good exercise.
Sewing is my hobby.
Heavy jogging may cause future knee injuries.
3. Line 6 in the poem will require three independent clauses, and line 7 will require the use of three gerunds. Please review notes.
Once notes were reviewed, students composed a biographical poem from a model.
Final product will be completed on a colored index card with a photo and collage.

Welcome to English 2 !!
Greetings...This is a new school year, and I am hoping that this class will enrich your life and help you to journey smoothly through your academic career.
Because of Advocacy time and scheduling, the calendar is tentative. During this first week, you will look closely at the expectations for this class as well review school policies, procedures and the rules for appropriate classroom etiquette.
1) You will fill out a student interest survey. [8/23] and review course outline and rules. Finish survey for homework and bring completed tomorrow, Tues. 8/24.
2) Create a bio-card. Literary Terms handout. [ 8/24]
3) Bring your new Holt-McDougal Literature Grade 10 book to class for a grade. [8/25]
4) Review selected literary terms, begin reading a short story.
5) You will take a short Grammar Diagnostics test, which will count as a daily grade.
6) You will take a quiz on literary terms studied (Friday).
6) Finally, you will be issued a novel and a schedule for independent reading (at home).
Reminder: Summer Reading Test : August 30, 2010
You are to take a test on the two novels assigned for summer reading: You Don't Know Me. If you were unaware of this reading assignment because you attended another school, please bring last report card as proof of attendance, and you will be given extra time to complete reading. Make sure you are prepared.
